10 Weeks!!!

Writer's picture: JanetJanet

Hello from week 10 + 1 day (for me that is) of self-isolation, self-distancing, shielding, soft lockdown?? Or whatever we are now in, is anyone else confused?? How is everyone doing as things seem to be getting back to a new normality? I really mean that, how are you? It’s no longer just a passing phrase is it? I will be eternally grateful for everyone that checked in with me, whether that was by phone call, email, chats or popping round whilst social distancing of course, bringing or sending little things to cheer me, times like these really show you who your friends are, let us all remember that. My family of course, even though they have been busy with their own things, during these times they have made sure to be in touch almost every day. I am beginning to feel a bit more normal now though as I've had to put my stroppy head on this last week to deal with a few issues!!

And how are we all feeling now things are beginning to open up again? I have noticed that people seem to be going about things much as normal just lately, well here in Malta anyway! If I could do one thing at the moment it would be teach people in general what one meter looks like and what self-distancing actually means! I haven’t been out a lot in this time but the occasional walk for a bit of exercise and yesterday people almost touched me as they passed, no masks, I was completely horrified! Is anyone else scared or is that just me? Have I been in too long? I am grateful that things are beginning to return to a new ‘normal’ but still a little apprehensive.

Here shops have been open for a little while, restaurants, hairdressers, nail bars etc., opened last week with restrictions, and this week I’ve managed to get my hair done, thanks Marian I love you! Believe me when I say it was absolutely essential! Obviously, using the new guidelines. She also had to cover up my attempt at cutting Steve’s hair, safe to say I won’t be doing that again!

Next up will be the airport I believe so we’ll see how that works out with the 14-day quarantine, I wonder how long that will last? I do realise that it is imperative to get the economy back on track, but in my opinion I think we all still need to be cautious. I really hope everyone is doing okay and getting on with things the best way possible. Everyone has to do what they feel best will keep them and their loved ones safe, so as always be kind. Mental health again is something we must all take into consideration.

Well here we are at the end of another month; it’s been a strange one again! I thought that the time would drag during these times, but it seems to be going just as fast or faster, for me at least! I keep hoping that the next time I write this nightmare will be over but we’re still in it, hopefully we're at the tail end of it now though, the bit where you are trying to wake up from the nightmare, realising that it’s almost over but you're still asleep and can’t move!

It’s been a bit of a weird month for us though, one where we would usually have been very busy, what with Mother’s Day in Malta, celebrated alone, as in with no children. To be fair it’s not the first time I’ve been without the girls on Mother’s day, I’ve been abroad on a couple of previous occasions, so really I can’t bemoan my lot about that and if things had gone as planned we would have been in Barcelona! I had some lovely flowers from my family though, so that was nice. Then Steve’s 60th, a milestone birthday, how did we get so old? We managed a celebration of sorts on our own, I had organised, cards, presents, champagne (my planning and buying in advance really came into its own this year) and we had lots of facetime chats with the family, an amazing video was also put together for him which was really thoughtful. At the end of the day some friends arrived outside with a balloon and wine & a cheese platter for us, again I thought that was so thoughtful, the friends we should have gone to Barcelona with as part of Steve’s birthday celebrations, let’s just say that is on hold for now. It wasn’t what we had planned but we managed to make the most of it. Last year I had asked Steve what he wanted to do for his 60th birthday and he replied that as long as he was sitting on the balcony with me that would be enough for him (we are so unalike!) but be careful what you wish for, as, like it or not, that’s exactly what he got!!

There have been a few other highlights this month, apart from Steve’s birthday! I found pink gin and tonic locally, heaven! And then I finally had a date for my diary, at long last! We had a virtual wine tasting event courtesy of Club Marsovin who teamed up with Infinitely Xara Catering, it was great, you have to be a bit inventive during these times and well done Marsovin for thinking outside the box. So, I did my hair got all dressed up, make up and everything and logged into Zoom, one small thing, I readily admit that I am technically challenged! I couldn’t get the camera to work, so although we could see everyone else, they couldn’t see us! Oh well I felt good at least and it was fun.

I have also been busy packing up the house, getting ready for our eventual move, which will probably be next month! For those that don’t already know, we are off to St. Paul’s Bay, it’s the start of a new chapter for Steve & I, life is constantly changing isn’t it? This is our next change, a new chapter, fingers crossed it all goes well, but I have a good feeling about it.

So, as usual I’ve been keeping busy. There have been lots of positives at this time, that much is true and I always try to look on the bright side of things, however nothing can replace the physical human touch of someone you love and miss, being able to travel freely, socialise and meet up with friends, share laughs and a few drinks, although I’m hopeful that the latter won’t be too far away, we do seem to be moving ever closer to it, I can almost taste it!

Finally, the giveaway, here is the video that Steve took of the draw, and I’m pleased to say that the winner is Roberta Myler, hopefully we will be able to meet up soon and I will give it to her then. I will do another one in the near future.

I hope I've managed to bring a smile to you all today.

Until next time, take care my lovelies
